The smallest and most southerly of the Balearic Islands, beautiful Formentera is tranquil and unspoilt. Just 30 minutes by boat from lively Ibiza, the island is a haven for romantic escapes and laid-back family holidays. Expect intimate hotels dotted along pristine sandy beaches or hidden in the island’s picturesque pine-studded interior. Most of the best places to stay in Formentera are independently owned; our Gurus have highlighted some of their favourites, chosen for their unique style and amenities.
Only 82 kilometres square, tiny Formentera has a blissful bohemian feel. There are no high-rise developments on the island, and very little of the party scene for which neighbouring Ibiza has become famous. Instead, spend your days strolling or cycling along the boardwalk which tops the island's undulating sand dunes, following the old Roman road and discovering ancient megalithic sites. Sant Francesc Xavier, the island's capital, is well worth a wander, as are the villages of La Savina and La Mola. For a bit of a buzz, venture to popular Es Pujols or Sant Ferran.
Out on the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll find ample opportunities to swim, snorkel and sail. Day-long boat charters with beach picnics in quiet coves, are very special. Come evening, sip sundowners at a laid-back bar, tuck into fresh seafood or enjoy rejuvenating wellness treatments at one of the best places to stay in Formentera.
